Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA) & Follow-on/Refresher

  • Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid

    Are you prepared for a mental health emergency?

    We know that it’s okay not to be okay and many people do want to ask for help when they are struggling...

    However, to have a positive experience and access appropriate support requires peers and colleagues to be equipped with the right skills and language.

    By engaging in a mental health first aid course you will learn:

    • How to recognise the signs of mental health problems.

    • How to provide initial help.

    • How to guide a person to appropriate help.

    • How to ask about suicide.

    Topics covered:

    The course includes:
    • Guidance on being a Mental Health First Aider.
    • Attitudes to mental health issues.
    • Equalities.
    • The recovery message.
    • The impact of alcohol and drugs on mental health.
    • Introduction to suicide intervention.
    • Listening skills.
    • Understanding depression.
    • How to offer first aid to someone experiencing depression.
    • Understanding anxiety.
    • How to offer first aid to someone experiencing anxiety.
    • Understanding psychosis.
    • How to offer first aid to someone experiencing a psychotic episode.

    This course is for 8-16 people, in-person, over 12 hours. It' is accredited by Public Health Scotland and everyone taking part will receive a manual.

    MHFA Follow-On/Refresher

    The MHFA Refresher course gives trained Mental Health First Aiders the chance to update their knowledge, revisit key tools, and practice applying them in real-life scenarios. You’ll leave feeling more prepared to spot the signs of poor mental health, support colleagues effectively, and look after your own wellbeing too.


    This can be delivered as a half-day, or full-day course, in person or online. The learning is Interactive and discussion-based.

Play, Improv and Psychological Safety

Session Overview:

  • Play 'Would You Rather: Workplace edition'.

  • Learn about the key concepts of psychological safety in the workplace, how this creates the conditions for growth and a tool to measure this in teams.

  • Design ideal planet environments and consider how we create these spaces as a group.

  • Play improv comedy games to develop our sense of safety, encourage failing in a positive way and to have fun!

  • A quick, anonymous pulse check using a validated PSI survey(takes 5 mins) that measures psychological safety across four critical dimensions:
